Theatres and cinemas around and about

The Hippodrome is situated in the centre of Bristol has a seating capacity of over 1900 and was opened in1912. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II listed building. The theatre now plays host to many top shows, such as Cats, Les Misérables, Blood Brothers and The Phantom of the Opera. This is due to the size of its stage, which is one of the largest outside of London. In addition to large musicals it is also a venue for comedians and 'one night shows' such as Derren Brown, French and Saunders and Russell Brand, as well as children's shows such as Winnie the Pooh Live. The Bristol Hippodrome has strong links with many shows that frequently appear there, such as the Welsh National Opera and the Scouts' Bristol Gang Show.


The Theatre Royal in Bath is over 200 years old - it is one of the more important theatres in the UK outside London, with capacity for an audience of around 900.

Alongside the weekly touring productions which make up the majority of the Theatre Royal's programme, the Theatre Royal is host to several festivals each year, including the Bath Shakespeare Festival and the Bath International Puppet Festival. Many plays start at the Theatre Royal before their official opening in London.

The theatre is a Grade II listed building  and is considered a prime example of Georgian architecture. The auditorium has tiers of ornate plaster work, with sumptuous red and gilt decoration, and a majestic trompe l'oeil ceiling and glittering chandelier. It was extensively renovated in 1982, and refurbished in 1999.

In 1997 a studio theatre was built called The Ustinov Studio. It is the home of Britain's largest annual international festival of adult puppetry, and a venue for an eclectic range of drama, dance and classical music.

In 2005 a second new theatre was opened behind the Theatre Royal, the egg, which is a children's theatre, providing professional theatre productions for children and their families, alongside workshops and youth theatre productions. It also has the egg Cafe, a family friendly cafe, run by Chandos Deli.

The Theatre's Vaults Restaurant provides pre-show dinners and matinee lunches, and a suite of rooms (The 1805 Rooms) are available for functions.


The Vue Cinema at Cribbs Causeway is opposite the Regional Shopping centre. It is a twelve Screen multiplex that boasts stadium seating for over 2580. It also has Dolby digital, DTS, Dolby Surround EX sound in selected auditoria. Naturally it features all the leading titles.
